English as a Second Language (ESL)

We aim to equip pupils for whom English is not their first language with the necessary skills and confidence in the use of English language to allow them to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential in their external exams..

Our Entrance tests and ongoing assessment procedures allow us to identify language ability and the type of ESL support required by each student.

Depending on their language ability, ESL pupils who join the Senior School in Year 9 are taught by a specialist ESL teacher for English, History, Geography, Religious Studies (RS) and ICT. This allows the pupils to ‘fast-track’ their English language learning and follow the same academic curriculum as other pupils. The aim is to ensure all students can start the (I)GCSE syllabus, starting in Year 10, with sufficient ability in the English to access the curriculum and achieve their potential in the (I)GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11.

Students entering the senior school must have a minimum level of KET (ideally with distinction).

We provide expert support for students who speak English as an additional language, who go on to take Cambridge (ESOL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exams.
